Interview by David Reinharc

Image Jewish Tribune: What in the work of a philosopher like Alain Badiou resonates with the sounds of the world?
Eric Marty In Europe, the existence of Israel had never been questioned so massive as by public opinion. Since the second Intifada, a mythology of Israel as a state with bloody murderous, genocidal, and resumed as a philosopher Alain Badiou. The year 2000 marks a break in the cultural field and in French public opinion against Israel. Badiou gives shape to the philosophical discourse about the illegitimacy the existence of a Jewish state. The confusion of the thought of helping extreme left - the idea of world revolution, a Grand Night is no longer valid - therefore emerges as a radical, it raises the secret hope that a new discourse will emerge .

TJ Why this discourse crystallizes Does Israel ?
É. M.: There is a phenomenon of exhaustion of investment revolutionary experiences after successive failures monstrous (Asia, Africa, South America). For once, the Middle East may be the subject of an investment without limits.

TJ Your explanation is cyclical, but watermark, is there not the eschatological idea that a world without Israel would be heaven on Earth?
É. M.: Absolutely. Israel blocks total eschatology because it maintains the idea of a native people that would have a specific right, to monotheism, the One, which prohibits all to unite in the same, the great obsession Badiou's philosophy of equality absolute. The Jewish people gets in Judaism because it is the otherness that originates absolutely prohibited a merger. The Jews maintain their otherness by an absolute impossibility for the unification of humanity.

TJ A dream of Parousia, Second Coming, which will be realized only if removing the obstacle Jew?
É. M.: Yes. Badiou back to a neo-Marxist lit a metaphysics of man insane, the divided subject of his condition be released through a kind of Second Coming to the unification of humanity : Finally, happen to be rational, be reconciled with itself.

TJ Jewish humor that is opposed to Badiou?
É. M.: Through the fantasy of total mathematization of thought, there is a unifying project, totalitarian, to rid the subject of any crack, any flaw. Now in Judaism, the fault is constitutive of the subject as an opening to another.

TJ You qualify for Alain Badiou philosopher villain. " In his latest book, What is Sarkozy's name?, rats is, precisely, which were named supporters of Sarkozy. Does this sound like he left the rhetoric of anti-Semitic?
É. M.: His book about Sarkozy is an absolute slip. I compare Badiou Maurras insofar some teachers base their authority among their followers rather a link to the existential truth, but on their own stamina to be the bearers of lying (Maurras and the Dreyfus Affair, Badiou and Cultural Revolution Maoist). It found the rhetoric of extreme right Badiou: the stigma of the name, the rat, on Sarkozy's sexuality, etc.. There is a very violent anti-democratic speech that poses the equation democracy = corruption. This is, strictly speaking, the discourse of the extreme right of the 1930s.

TJ The road to revolution is blocked by the obstacle Jew. The Jew is substituted for the Christ figure of the Palestinian ...
É. M.: And also that of the poor: should the whole world is filled as poor. It's a very Christian on Earth if there were only the poor, there would be no corruption, there would be an absolute virtue.

TJ Behind the condemnation of Israel is playing he not an old theological dispute: the love of the Jewish law against the law of love of St. Paul?
É. M.: Saint Paul is a decadent Jew for whom the letter is dead. On the road to Damascus, suddenly, the relationship to the Act no longer makes sense. The 1970 went into the Jewish meaning in relation to the letter, the Law, "empire of signs" (Barthes): the letter and the sign has a meaning. For Barthes, Derrida and Lacan, the letter we got rid of the Christian psychology of sentimentality Psychology and petty bourgeois, the doxa where letter was cleared behind tons of good feelings, which precluded having a living relationship to thought. Badiou is a complete anti-modern because, over the letter he wants to return the good feelings.

TJ If Badiou's thought is foreign to the dimension of language, then no more than violence?
É. M.: Words for Badiou enemies are profound: the word "Jew" for example. It would take a great concept that brings together all the words into one, a word of great violence and intensity, such as "equality." While Judaism is reading endless generations, for Badiou, is full emancipation of the "anti-humanism the same."
